Psychology+Architecture

Upon investigation and some research, i soon found that the study and architecture is a broad and diverse including many different field such as aesthetic, psychology-environment, social and etc. Environment psychology also be broken into several elements that is attention or understanding how people notice their environment and to motivate them naturally feel competent, confident, comfort or enjoyment. I asked myself how to integrate between corridor design and psychology variables in term of color+sunlight+walking distance.

experience color

Color has an impact on the choices we make especially for our design. I have also included color personality that give some sight and reaction to different colors. Basically, color divided by two that is cool and warm. These two category ultimately give different of impression to human feel.

Blue
-As the collective color of the spirit, it invokes rest and can cause the body to produce chemicals that are calming; however not all blues are serene and sedate. Electric or brilliant blues become dynamic and dramatic, an engaging color that expresses exhilaration.
+ Calming and sedate
+ Cooling
+ Aids intuition

Green-The natural greens, from forest to lime, are seen as tranquil and refreshing, with a natural balance of cool and warm. Green is considered the color of peace and ecology.
+ Relaxing mentally as well as physically
+ Helps alleviate depression, nervousness and anxiety
+ Offers a sense of renewal, self-control and harmony

Green corridor

Red-Recognized as a stimulant red is inherently exciting and the amount of red is directly related to the level of energy perceived. Red draws attention and a keen use of red as an accent can immediately focus attention on a particular element.
+ Increases enthusiasm
+ Stimulates energy
+ Encourages action and confidence
+ A sense of protection from fears and anxiety

Immediately I start to think and imagine. How our corridor will looks like?what color is suitable and most important is why choose that color.

Suggestion-We can use both type of color (warm+cool) but in different situation through activity around and different level. Most of the corridor can use cool color because mentally relaxing, harmony and helps alleviate depression. Through this feel, people can walk much longer. Warm color(red, yellow) can give people immediately focus attention on particular element and give sense or protection from fears. We can use warm color to place that high possibility crime will happen such as beside main road that high possible will happen snatch crime. Other than that, warm color can use at education corridor area because that is place for kids and children. This color psychologically can make them more aware to surrounding environment.

Now we notice right? This is why most of the signboard at road were colored by red. This is to make people more careful psychologically.

Can the sun make people happy?

Sun exposure isn't all bad. In fact, it's mostly good. A chronic lack of sun exposure has been linked to fertility problems, several forms of cancer, general poor health and varying degrees of depression.
People actually get depressed, with symptoms like sadness, fatigue and hopelessness from a lack of sunlight. There's another factor involved in sunlight's affect on mood that is vitamin D. The body actually creates its supply of vitamin D from the sun's ultraviolet rays hitting the skin.

sunlight can make people tired?

In other hand, do you know that sunlight also can make people tired and exhausted? This is not only from the heat, which causes Potassium and Sodium deficiency because of sweating. But is also due to wheat allergy because the sun has burned up the body supply of Vitamin F.

Suggestion-Malaysia is the tropical climate country that receive sunlight a long year. How to prevent people get tired because of sunlight and it will course the corridor not practical. We want sunlight but not directly. We can use full covered corridor with right orientation through sunpath. We can use filter a long corridor (louvers+lanscape filter). This will make people more comfort to walk.

How Far Can You Walk?

There are a lot of variables to take into consideration:

Terrain - is it flat or are there hills? are the hills steep or rolling?
Surface - you can make better time on pavement than you can on soft dirt, mud or soft sand sucks and snow & ice are another matter altogether.
Tactical Situation - can you just put your head down and plod on or do you have to slow down and watch for hazards?
Navigation - do you know exactly where you're going or do you have to pay attention to the map/gps
Number in Your Group - as somebody pointed out you'll only move as fast as your slowest person.
Individual Loadout - how much weight you're carrying is a factor
Logistics - bring your own water (increased weight) or find it along the way? do you have to purify what you get along the way? are you going to boil it or pump it though a filter? stopping for meals? are they ready to eat or do you have to take time to prepare them?
